Interview with Tirthankar Bose: Founder of ThePoorNomad, a Travel blog
1. Can you please tell us a little bit about yourself and your Blog?
Hi this is Tirthankar Bose. A backpacker, travel blogger, a freelancer and an SEO analyst. I run a blog named 'ThePoorNomad'. Few years back, I was nowhere. Had a job with good salary but not happy. Paying all my EMIs on time but the inner satisfaction was not there.
Started 03 companies but failed. It was tough.
But those failed startups taught me lessons that my school couldn't. And that was never give up. I started again but this time, I started a travel blog because travel is the only thing that I love. I learnt about SEO - changed my career - and after 1 and half years, I am happy and satisfied.
I work as an SEO analyst for a firm & do freelancing and blogging after office. And you know what, I earn more than the salary that I have left a year and half back. May be after a year or two, I get the opportunity to leave my job and can concentrate only on my blog and freelancing.
2. What did you do before Blogging? What inspired you to start blogging?
I used to work as an Assistant Manager for an event firm but was not that happy even with a good salary. Money was there but not happiness. It was this happiness which always inspired me do something which I love rather than going for a 9-5 job.
3. As a blogger, what are the challenges you face? How you overcome it?
Being a blogger, I always face 2 challenges.
1. Bad in grammar:
Yes, I am not good in English. I have seen bloggers whose articles are much more crisp with proper grammatical structure.
I always use Grammarly to help me out in this. But there is one thing I am good at. And that is ranking my articles on Google.
2. Insufficient Time
This is one of the biggest challenges that I face. I work for 09 hrs for a firm. And after completing my professional schedule, I get only 04 hrs which I have to divide between freelancing and blogging.
Even, Saturdays & Sundays for me is 09 -10 hrs of blogging & SEO work. I don't get much time even to listen to music or watch cricket.
4. What would you consider to be your biggest achievement in your journey so far as a Blogger?
I have seen bloggers with 20k - 30 k monthly visits after 5-6years of blogging. I must say getting this huge numbers is not that easy.
But whether you term it as god's grace or my hard work, right now I have achieved 6k monthly visits per month and that too in just 10 months of blogging. And planning to touch 20 k monthly visits by 2019 mid.
5. Have you worked/collaborate with brands? If yes, name few brands you worked with
I haven't but in talks with a couple of brands for advertisements. I am very choosy about brands.
6. What is your primary income source?
Freelancing is my primary source of income as I work on Upwork and many other freelancing sites during my off hours. However, blogging do provide me a small source of income but that's my passive source of earning money.
7. Top 3 Blogging tools that you would recommend to your readers?
Blogging is an art and with the help of right blogging tools you can grow your visibility and can enhance your blogging experience as well as your readers. In this list, I will tell you my top 3 blogging tools which I use on daily basis and the best part is that they are free.
1. Headline Analyzer:
Headline Analyzer basically helps you to create engaging headlines that drive traffic & shares.
2. Yoast SEO:
Yoast SEO is a Wordpress plugin designed to help users to improve different parameters of on-page SEO. It takes care of everything from creating keyword rich meta titles, descriptions, Sitemaps and so on.
Whether you want to make featured images, detailed infographics, or just a few visuals to go within your posts, you can do it all in Canva for free.
8. One piece of advice that you would like to share with all new bloggers?
In this whole journey, there are a lot of things which I have learnt about blogging. I always learnt the hard way and there are chances you might face the same thing. So being a blogger, would like to suggest some tips which might help you out in your blogging career:
1. Create A Content That People Need:
In the beginning no one will care about you. And that is the harsh truth. You are not going to get any traffic from Google.
So your first priority would be building an audience. And for that, you need to write articles that they need. I have seen bloggers writing contents which they think are right for them but that's not the right way to go.
2. Pick One Social Platform & Focus On It:
Stop trying to be everywhere when you have no idea on how to work on it. Always remember, a jack of all trades is a master of none. So pick one or two social sites and focus on them.
Note: Try focusing on the ones you actually enjoy being on.
3. Money Is A By-Product:
Yes, you heard it right. Money is a by-product. Blogging should be your priority and not money. If you are planning to start blogging only for money then leave it.
There are very high chances that somewhere down the line you will get demotivated.
Work on your blog, create engaging and informative contents which help your readers. And if you can do this, trust me money will start pouring in. But first work on the quality.
9. Finally, what are your thoughts about Skill Infinity?
You guys do have a great website with a good bunch of bloggers (both newbie and Pros). Just an idea, try creating meetups in different cities. It will help bloggers as well as it help you too, to create a brand name for yourself.
